Mold and Mildew: The Bathroom's Silent Enemy

bathroom renovations
Mould - a serious health hazard

Bathrooms, with their constant exposure to moisture, are breeding grounds for mould and mildew. These unsightly and potentially harmful fungi can thrive in damp environments, causing damage to surfaces, fixtures, and even posing health risks.

Understanding Mould and Mildew

Mould and mildew are types of fungi that grow in warm, damp areas. While they play a crucial role in nature, indoors, they can be a serious problem.

  • Mould: Typically appears in fuzzy or woolly clusters of various colours.

  • Mildew: Usually white and grows in flat patches.

Health Risks Associated with Mould and Mildew

Exposure to mould and mildew can lead to:

  • Respiratory issues (asthma, coughing, sneezing)

  • Allergic reactions

  • Skin irritation

  • Headaches

  • Dizziness

Individuals with weakened immune systems or pre-existing respiratory conditions are particularly susceptible.

How to Remove Mould and Mildew

  1. Let the fresh air in: By improving airflow in your home will help decrease the chances of mould and mildew growth. Open windows, doors and install wall vents to let the fresh air in.

  2. Check your gutters: Are they full of leaves or damaged? This too can lead to leaks in your roof, which is a major cause of mould build up in the home.

  3. Clear the area: Remove all items from the affected area.

  4. Clean with appropriate products: Use a cleaner specifically designed for mould and mildew removal. There is a range of mould sprays designed for your bathroom that are readily available at supermarkets and hardware stores.

  5. Scrub thoroughly: Use a brush or sponge to remove mould and mildew from surfaces.

  6. Rinse and dry: Rinse the area with clean water and dry completely to prevent regrowth.

  7. Get moisture absorbers: There are many handy products available that help absorb excess moisture, helping maintain a healthy humidity level in your home.

Preventing Mould and Mildew

  • Reduce humidity: Use exhaust fans, open windows, or dehumidifiers.

  • Keep surfaces dry: Wipe down surfaces after use and use a shower squeegee.

  • Launder linens regularly: Wash towels, curtains, and mats frequently.

  • Choose mould-resistant materials: Opt for non-porous, groutless, and waterproof materials.

By following these steps, you can effectively eliminate mould and mildew and create a healthier, more pleasant bathroom environment.

Is it time for a bathroom renovation?

If you've tried these methods to remove mould and mildew but the problem persists or is particularly severe, it might be time to consider a more extensive solution: bathroom renovation.
